Not so long ago our founders, Gauthier and Matt, were students struggling to pay for textbooks, like so many of their peers. Textbook prices continue to skyrocket, leaving students unable to afford the resources they need. Some students resort to piracy and second-hand books, but many others are priced out of the education system altogether. This not only limits student’s access to knowledge but also leaves researchers, authors and the publishing industry at a loss. Perlego was born to provide an affordable (and sustainable) textbook solution for learners around the world, by partnering with publishers and removing the costs of print, distribution, and retail markup. We believe education has the power to transform lives. By empowering people with all the resources they need to learn, we can give everyone a fair chance at a brighter future. Knowing which sources you can trust has never been more important. By partnering with publishers, we support researchers and the creation of trustworthy educational resources. We’ve built sustainability into our core by cutting out resource-heavy print and distribution services. As we grow, we’re working hard to make a positive impact on our planet.

The college which would become the University of Chester was founded in 1839 by such pioneers as the 19th-century prime ministers William Gladstone and the Earl of Derby, and a future Archbishop of Canterbury. The institution's original buildings were the first in the country to be purpose-built for the professional training of teachers. The first cohort of 10 male student teachers had been taught in temporary premises in Nicholas Street from February 1840, until increasing student numbers led to a move to further temporary accommodation in Bridge Street later that year. The need for a permanent site led the Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral to donate land adjacent to Parkgate Road, and the new facilities were opened in 1842 for the 50 student teachers and their school pupils. The Parkgate Road Campus has subsequently been developed to accommodate the needs of students, and the University still provides higher education in this location and at other sites in the city and beyond. Education qualifications remain significant and are now a fraction of the 420 course combinations on offer. In the 20th Century, the institution steadily expanded its student numbers and the variety and nature of its courses, which range from Animation to Zoo Management. The University of Chester now has over 1,700 staff and some 20,000 students, drawn from the United Kingdom, Europe and further afield, particularly from the United States, India, China, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. MPhil and PhD qualifications are an established and growing area of activity, with the University gaining the powers to award its own research degrees in 2007. The emphasis is very much on research that has practical benefits both economically and culturally, and the University provides consultancy support across a variety of areas of expertise. Recent projects have included helping to develop England’s first ‘carbon-neutral’ village, discovering a vitamin compound which reduces the risk of heart disease and dementia, translating the Bible into British Sign Language, and research into understanding the psychological impact of cancer to improve wellbeing and quality of life for patients and their families. Development of well-respected courses in Health and Social Care, Humanities, Business and Management, Arts and Media, Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Clinical Sciences, and Education and Children’s Services has further extended the University’s work and connections with industry, commerce and the professions. Many millions of pounds are continually invested in the accommodation and resources to enhance the student experience, and there is a strong focus on making students feel supported and at home.

The UK’s universities are world leading. The mission of Universities UK (UUK) is to support them. We do this by campaigning for conditions that help increase their impact locally, nationally and globally. The success of UK higher education is built on a spirit of collaboration. The free flow of ideas and knowledge depends on it. Which is why we’ve been fostering close relationships between UK universities for more than a century. Today, we’re the collective voice of 140 universities across the UK. Our universities have world-leading reputations for excellence in teaching and research, making a huge difference to people’s lives. Together with our members, we aim to shape policy that allows universities to deliver the greatest impact possible for students, staff, the economy, and the communities they serve. By demonstrating these benefits, we’re helping UK universities build trust with policymakers and the public. Universities Wales and Universities Scotland work autonomously as part of Universities UK, representing the interests of universities in Wales and Scotland. They campaign, influence and develop policy on behalf of the higher education sectors in the devolved nations. Our vision for the future of the UK higher education sector focuses on five key areas. With our support, UUK members turn this vision into reality for the benefit of society and the world at large: Opportunity. Giving everyone with the will and potential to succeed access to outstanding learning experiences. Impact. Maintaining our world-leading reputation for producing and applying knowledge and skills. Trust. Promoting public trust and political support for UK universities by demonstrating the positive impact on students, the economy, public services and society. Global. Maintaining the position of UK universities as global leaders in international education and research. Autonomy. Protecting the freedom to make autonomous decisions according to a university’s diverse mission and the needs of their students and communities. As the voice of universities across the UK, we must account for the diversity of policies and priorities in devolved nations. Our recent achievements include: International students. Campaigning for greater recognition of the cultural and economic importance of international students. This resulted in a two-year post-study graduate work visa, increasing the popularity of the UK as an international study destination. Mental health. Improving wellbeing and mental health support for university students and staff through our Stepchange Framework. Lifelong learning. Successfully campaigning for changes to make it easier for people of all ages to learn and up-skill part time. Collective campaigning. Bringing universities together to tell inspirational stories. Our current Made at Uni campaign, called Creative Sparks, showcases the role of universities in creating healthier and more active places and supporting people’s health and wellbeing as we recover from the pandemic. Covid-19 support. Coordinating efforts on behalf of our members to provide information, and secure support for students and universities during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Founded in 1953, International House (IH), is a global network of 150 affiliated language schools in more than 50 countries. All IH schools are independently owned and managed and are members of IH because they are committed to the very highest standards in language education face-to-face and online. Schools in the network teach English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and a wide variety of other languages. Across our membership network, IH schools train about half of all CELTA graduates in the world. We have well over 200,000 students, and our member schools employ in excess of 5,800 teachers. International House World Organisation is the central membership office for the International House network. We manage the IH brand, work with schools who wish to affiliate to IH, develop our quality scheme and ensure these standards are met through regular inspections, and manage network communications, publicity, and news. The International House Journal of Education and Development was founded by Charles Lowe (then director of IH London) and Matthew Barnard, in 1996. The original intention was to provide a forum for debate, a platform for creating new ideas and re-floating old ones, debunking myths and generally generate a sense of adventure for people teaching TEFL or teaching English as a Second Language. The new digital IH Journal is published twice a year, in autumn and spring, and aims to include some of the best and most stimulating thinking in language teaching in a variety of modern languages. This History section of the IH Journal was compiled by Brita Haycraft, co-founder of International House. John Haycraft was, of course, the original chronicler of IH stories, Babel in Spain (Hamish Hamilton 1958) and Babel in London (Hamish Hamilton 1965) and Adventures of a Language Traveller (Constable 1958). We have included articles written by Brita herself, some of which have appeared in previous editions of the IH Journal, along with anecdotes and memories from those who were part of the first ground-breaking years of International House. The articles follow the journey of International House as chronicled by Brita and others from its beginning in Cordoba when the first school was opened in 1953. We hope to be readable but serious, though always with room to be light-hearted as well. We are always on the lookout for new materials ideas, papers, photos and articles. We always want profiles and pictures of your school and its teachers, so get on to the computer and start writing! It might be the start of something big – who knows, maybe you will be the next Ruth Gairns or Michael Lewis! For affiliate schools, we arrange a number of annual conferences, offer recruitment services and list vacancies on our Jobs website, and organise events for Study Abroad schools. We also develop and offer a suite of online teacher training courses for teachers who want to invest in their continued professional development or specialise in a particular area of interest.
