Janet Raloff, a Science News staffer for 40 years, is the driving force behind the brilliance of Science News for Students. She’s committed to journalistic excellence while also educating a new generation on all thing’s science. Founded in 2003, Science News for Students is an award-winning online publication dedicated to providing age-appropriate, topical science news to learners, parents and educators. Science News for Students is a publication of the Science News Media Group, which is a program of the Society for Science, a non-profit 501(c)(3) membership organization dedicated to public engagement in scientific research and education. Science News for Students — which is free to use — helps to fulfil the Society’s mission by connecting the latest in scientific research to learning in and out of the classroom. Since 1921, when renowned journalist Edward W. Scripps and California zoologist William Emerson Ritter founded the Society (then known as Science Service), the Society has conveyed the excitement of science and research directly to the public through its award-winning publications. The organization launched its flagship publication in 1921 as Science News-Letter. The publication, which was redesigned as a magazine in 1926, quickly grew into a prime source of science news for libraries, schools and individuals. Renamed Science News in 1966, this award-winning magazine now attracts millions of readers annually to its daily online and biweekly print publications. Science News for Students (formerly Science News for Kids) publishes award-winning journalism on research across the breadth of science, health and technology fields. It aims to bring these new developments to a younger audience. Published daily, Science News for Students posts both shorter news stories and longer features, all written with a vocabulary and sentence structure aimed at readers 9 to 14 years old. The breadth of technical subjects and tone attracts many advanced readers as well. Our stories highlight ongoing research in fields ranging from astronomy to zoology. (Science News for Students does not publish original scientific results.) Stories are reported by experienced science journalists, many with PhDs in the fields on which they write. To help teachers, parents and other educators, each story includes further readings, citations to the original research on which the stories are based, power words (glossary terms) and a readability score that ensures the text is accessible to teens and tweens. Many stories also have extra materials to aid in classroom use. In addition, Science News for Students publishes other features that show students, teachers and parents how science really works, what scientists do, what goes into conducting first-class research and science projects and how anyone can get involved in doing science. The Society for Science also runs world-class science-education competitions for youth — the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Broadcom MASTERS. Today, the Society is dedicated to providing concise, accurate science news and inspirational opportunities to over 115,000 subscribing members, the 50,000 worldwide alumni of our competitions and millions of unique online visitors and social media followers.
Students for a Better Future’s core mission is to provide students displaying academic potential, who are financially needy and demonstrate resilience and tenacity, with the opportunity to study at some of the best high schools and post–secondary institutions in Cape Town. South African-born Sue Struengmann and her German husband Dr Andreas Struengmann first recognised the need to invest in South Africa’s children through education whilst working together in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape. Both were working in Tsolo at the time, Dr Struengmann as a medical intern at the mission hospital and Mrs Struegmann, in the local school. They were struck by the lack of resources available to the community. Mrs Struengmann recalls that there wasn’t enough medicine and not even pens and pencils available to learners at the school. At that point, they made a promise to each other that if they were ever successful enough, they would do their part to help young people in this country get a good education. ExploreHealthCareers.org is a free, peer-reviewed website designed to educate students and advisors about health careers. ExploreHealthCareers.org’s mission is to help solve two urgent problems in U.S. health care: the under-representation of minorities in the workforce and the shortage of health professionals in medically underserved communities. ExploreHealthCareers.org hopes to help build a stronger health care workforce by providing easy access to updated, peer-reviewed career descriptions that inspire and motivate students to find health careers that suit them. Their vision is to see the health professionals of tomorrow be highly skilled and motivated, and as diverse as the patients they serve. Considering that, health care is a vast field that offers a range of diverse opportunities, it is important that all student research before deciding on a position to make sure you choose one that’s a good fit for them. People can start with the Career Explorer in their website, as it collects details about all different types of health care positions to allow you to compare and contrast those that interest you. Furthermore, the best health care practitioners are committed to giving their patients the best care possible. These health care practitioners prioritize keeping up with the latest developments in the field, continuing to study and learn long after their initial schooling ends. If you have a similar interest in lifelong learning, it’s a good idea to consider entering the health care field. Finally, Health care is increasingly focusing on team work as patients’ recovery depends more and more on how well each member of the team performs his or her specific function and how well they communicate and collaborate with one another. Even dentists — 70% of whom work in a solo private practice — usually supervise and work closely with several staff members. When choosing a health care position, you’ll want to consider the amount of teamwork it requires to ensure it’s a good fit for you and your working style.

Wordworks is a South African non-profit organisation that focuses on early language and literacy development in the first eight years of children’s lives. Since 2005 they have worked in under-resourced communities with adults best positioned to positively impact young children’s language and literacy development – parents and caregivers, family and community members, home-visitors, early childhood development practitioners and Grade R to Grade 3 teachers. They are working collaboratively to grow an informed, capable, resourced and motivated network of schools, organisations and institutions that promote the importance of, and work effectively for the improvement of, children’s early language and literacy, through their association with their programmes and materials. Wordworks offers training, resources and support for partners who wish to use their early language and literacy programmes in their own networks. Their programmes all include messaging about the importance of language for literacy development and the need to build children’s home language in the early years as a foundation for the acquisition of a second language. They advocate for children to have access to multilingual, language rich stories and books, as well as meaningful experiences with print. They also know that letter-sound knowledge and phonological awareness are key predictors of whether children learn to read and write, and have developed resources and guidelines to support these important foundations for literacy. Their programmes are based on an emergent literacy perspective and the idea that learning to read and write is a process that happens over time in the context of supportive and responsive relationships. They offer five main programmes, which are used by their network of partners which include preschools, schools, libraries, community organisations, training and resource NGOs, tertiary institutions, education districts and other government departments. Programmes are sustained through ongoing relationships with Wordworks, including refresher training and events, input and guidance, access to resources and opportunities, sharing of learning, and support for programme monitoring and evaluation. They develop, produce and distribute innovative, high quality multilingual materials to support early language and literacy learning. They invest in public education and advocacy, sharing knowledge and ideas to open doors for all children.

They offer clubs for students to explore coding in a fun & friendly environment, a wide range of programs aimed at supporting college-aged students and early career professionals (18-25) in persisting in their computer science education and succeeding in their first internships and jobs, and a virtual summer program for high school students to learn coding and make an impact in their community while preparing for a career in tech.
