Breakthru’s Learn-2-Earn feature helps students personally, professionally, and financially in just a few minutes a day. While a micro-payment from Breakthru certainly isn’t going to eliminate student debt entirely, it can cover a safe Uber ride from the library after studying late, a Netflix subscription to help decompress at the end of a long day, a toilet paper order from Amazon, or a Venti-Iced-Cappuccino once a week without buyers remourse. Learn-2-Earn allows students to explore different career, volunteer, or financial opportunities while adding to their Breakthru wallets. Instead of having students pay to use resources, we are giving them unlimited opportunities to build and grow their net worth so that they can pay for college as well as fulfill other various personal needs. Students have multiple ways to earn while using the Breakthru app. One option students have is the Play-2-Earn feature, where students complete a Daily Opportunity by showing their interest in a few general opportunities. Then, students will be able to unlock our in-app spin-the-wheel game, where they can generate points and keep trying their hand at a scholarship bonus. Another way students can earn is by achieving Badges through discovering opportunity, and accessing future-enhancing information. Learn-2-Earn helps students by giving them a chance to feel accomplished because they are earning on their own without having to look too far or high. The feeling you get when you’ve earned something also brings a lot of reassurance. With the launch of a new Learn-2-Earn feature, Breakthru announces a partnership with Forage, CollegeXpress, and Front Office Sports to help create equitable access to financial, education and career opportunities. Breakthru Opportunities are created by companies students already know about, or haven’t met yet. Forage, CollegeXpress, and Front Office Sports recently launched their own Learn-2-Earns, providing engaging student opportunities filled with career-building, financial, and professional resources. Students that show interest in listed opportunities are prompted to earn badges showing that they have interacted with a specific opportunity or that they have reached one of Breakthru’s in-app milestones. Students like earning badges to show their progress or achievements. Earning a badge tells a student that they have achieved a goal! It’s a boost of accomplishment that can help students feel good about themselves, while learning something new that can help them in the future (plus a micro-payment).

Linguaschools started as a small project matching language school students with high quality, ‘hidden’ Spanish language schools. This has evolved into one of the leading networks of high-quality Spanish language schools in Spain and Latin America. Over this time, we have never compromised on our initial philosophy: to offer an unforgettable experience by providing high quality Spanish courses in a unique cultural context. Linguaschools was set up by a former Spanish language school student and a spirited backpacker. Both wanted to share their passion for off the beaten path cultural experiences, realising that learning to speak the language is essential to enjoying local culture. Both also recognised that learning a language is also the perfect platform for a profound cultural immersion. Linguaschools started by placing students in hand-picked ‘hidden’ language schools, those that offered high quality but struggled to get recognition for their services. These were small to medium-sized language schools with a familiar atmosphere, schools where students have a name not a number. That ideology continues today, as we believe high quality language education goes hand in hand with an unforgettable cultural encounter. Back in 2005 we found that this profile of Spanish language schools were barely represented, or very difficult to find by language school students. Linguaschools developed by hand-picking a limited selection of the very best Spanish schools. These were schools who believed the same philosophy for cultural immersion and met the very high Linguaschools standards. Over the years, Linguaschools has converted into a network of Spanish schools throughout Spain and Latin America. We have our own schools, as well as working with partner schools who share our philosophy and high standards. Today, many thousands of students per year enjoy the Linguaschools experience. We are dedicated to innovating, maintaining our quality standards, and having fun while doing it.
Founded in 1953, International House (IH), is a global network of 150 affiliated language schools in more than 50 countries. All IH schools are independently owned and managed and are members of IH because they are committed to the very highest standards in language education face-to-face and online. Schools in the network teach English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and a wide variety of other languages. Across our membership network, IH schools train about half of all CELTA graduates in the world. We have well over 200,000 students, and our member schools employ in excess of 5,800 teachers. International House World Organisation is the central membership office for the International House network. We manage the IH brand, work with schools who wish to affiliate to IH, develop our quality scheme and ensure these standards are met through regular inspections, and manage network communications, publicity, and news. The International House Journal of Education and Development was founded by Charles Lowe (then director of IH London) and Matthew Barnard, in 1996. The original intention was to provide a forum for debate, a platform for creating new ideas and re-floating old ones, debunking myths and generally generate a sense of adventure for people teaching TEFL or teaching English as a Second Language. The new digital IH Journal is published twice a year, in autumn and spring, and aims to include some of the best and most stimulating thinking in language teaching in a variety of modern languages. This History section of the IH Journal was compiled by Brita Haycraft, co-founder of International House. John Haycraft was, of course, the original chronicler of IH stories, Babel in Spain (Hamish Hamilton 1958) and Babel in London (Hamish Hamilton 1965) and Adventures of a Language Traveller (Constable 1958). We have included articles written by Brita herself, some of which have appeared in previous editions of the IH Journal, along with anecdotes and memories from those who were part of the first ground-breaking years of International House. The articles follow the journey of International House as chronicled by Brita and others from its beginning in Cordoba when the first school was opened in 1953. We hope to be readable but serious, though always with room to be light-hearted as well. We are always on the lookout for new materials ideas, papers, photos and articles. We always want profiles and pictures of your school and its teachers, so get on to the computer and start writing! It might be the start of something big – who knows, maybe you will be the next Ruth Gairns or Michael Lewis! For affiliate schools, we arrange a number of annual conferences, offer recruitment services and list vacancies on our Jobs website, and organise events for Study Abroad schools. We also develop and offer a suite of online teacher training courses for teachers who want to invest in their continued professional development or specialise in a particular area of interest.

AIL Madrid is an Instituto Cervantes accredited Spanish language school. We provide high quality, affordable Spanish language courses. AIL Madrid is situated in the heart of the Spanish capital near Retiro park. We are committed to ensure your Spanish learning experience in Madrid is enjoyable and enriching. AIL Madrid will give you more friends than Facebook, more professional skills than LinkedIn, more family than you can count to embarrass you on holiday, and will make your heart explode from loving your life too much. AIL Madrid’s curriculum is designed by Spanish language rocket scientists and will launch your Spanish skills into outer space faster than Sputnik. AIL Madrid is Picasso’s greatest work in Madrid’s edgiest museum, the sound of a Flamenco guitar in a softly lit room, late nights at the bar with new friends, and only one question remains: are you ready for it? Though the academy actually began fifteen years ago, in the tiny living room of my Madrid city center flat, the beginning of the story dates back to when I first arrived in Madrid in the year 2000. My initial experience of the city was intoxicating; the language, the nightlife, and the vibrancy and history of the city itself. I fell in love with Madrid immediately, feeling a thrill every time I had the opportunity to introduce visitors to my new home, and knew Madrid would form a long term narrative in my life. After three years, during which I achieved a near perfect use of the Spanish language (my British accent remains and will forever accompany me!), I felt the pull to learn something new so, taking advantage of some holiday time, went to France to do a short intensive French course. While there, I met the director of a language school in Montpellier who gave me my first insight into an academy from the teaching and directing perspective. At that moment, a small seed was planted and slowly began to take root in my mind. Was this what I wanted to do? I loved learning languages, loved knowledgeable, enthusiastic teachers, and knew what it took to engage a student.

The Centro Mediterraneo Pintadera was founded in 2004 for the purpose of furthering the Italian language and culture. Located in a quiet, picturesque alley in the old town of Alghero in Sardinia, Pintadera is run by two dynamic women. Angela is from Alghero, whilst Nicola is a native of Berlin with a diverse international background. Welcoming and relaxing, Pintadera offers the perfect atmosphere for learning the Italian language and gaining a unique insight into Sardinian culture. We take language out of the classroom and onto the streets of Alghero so that our students soon feel part of the community. Learning with Pintadera is inspiring. Our teachers are energetic university graduates, specialized in the teaching of Italian as a second language, chosen for their teaching ability as well as their engaging personalities. From the beginning, we take our students out of the classroom and onto the vibrant streets of Alghero. Not only will you speak Italian, but you will eat, drink, and above all live and breathe the Italian language in Alghero Sardinia. We offer a complete range of Italian Language courses, tailored to your interests and abilities, and a variety of Special Courses which convey this Mediterranean culture and our way of life. Our program is not merely a language course, but a total immersion in the rich life of our town. Our objective is to provide Italian language teaching in a pleasant and stimulating environment through a balanced combination of study and leisure. The heart of Centro Mediterraneo Pintadera’s Italian program is the Lingua group language course, with maximum 8 students per class. The lessons are normally divided into two parts, with a different teacher guiding each segment. The first part emphasizes Italian grammar and structure. The second part focuses on the application and exercise of these linguistic rules in real life settings. We do not employ standard Italian textbooks but instead produce our own class and take-home materials which are modified to the particular interests, abilities and needs of the group. This method has proven most effective in teaching adults who come to us from different backgrounds and who respond most favourably when treated in a way that is personally significant. Pintadera carefully selects readings from Italy’s most celebrated poets, playwrights, and novelists. Wide varieties of current-event materials such as newspapers, magazines, radio and TV broadcasts are used in the Pintadera learning experience. Together, the student is enlightened to valuable Italian cultural, historic and contemporary perspectives and supplemented with improved linguistic and communicative skills. Centro Mediterraneo Pintadera offers three basic levels of Italian proficiency: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. Absolute beginner classes generally begin the first Monday of every month. Intermediate and advanced learners may start on any Monday, and depending on student circumstances, may enjoy the liberty of beginning on other days. Centro Mediterraneo Pintadera offers not only Italian language courses. We welcome and assist those that wish to settle in Sardinia for a longer period of time. We know the town, we know the people, we can help with logistics like finding the appropriate accommodation, and we know how to navigate the local bureaucracy. We will help you settle in Sardinia, while you learn to speak Italian with us and gradually become a part of our community.

L’Italiano Porticando, founded at the beginning of 2005 with the aim to be a cut above ordinary language schools in Turin and to provide a specialized centre and point of reference for those who want to study the Italian language and culture in Turin. Turin is in a city well-known as an industrial centre, but little-known by tourists, Turin has, however, an incredible artistic and cultural legacy to offer to those who love Italy, its language and its culture. The school was founded and is managed by Laura Faussone, Caterina Costanzo and Rosaria Costanzo. The three partners joined their long experience and their abilities in teaching the Italian language, culture and history to foreigners in order to give life to a project which at that time was new in Piedmont: the possibility to experience the Italian language and culture in a destination which is not typical for foreigners as, for example, Rome, Florence, Siena or Venice. The three founders are present and active in the school’s life. They have structured their role within the school according to their competencies and experience. Rosaria – who has an university degree in foreign literature and languages and in business administration - is mainly responsible for marketing and administration. Laura – who is specialized in arts and who has an university degree in architecture – is responsible for the cultural part of L’Italiano Porticando and for contacts in Italy and Caterina – who has graduated as an interpreter and translator – is the contact person and teacher coordinator and is responsible for the course structure. The school’s teachers are selected with great care according to their education and their experience as teachers for Italian language and culture to foreigners. All teachers are native speakers, have a university degree, and are highly motivated and experienced in supporting foreign students in their first meeting with Italy and the Italian language and during the language learning process. The organization launched its flagship publication in 1921 as Science News-Letter. To help teachers, parents and other educators, each story includes further readings, citations to the original research on which the stories are based, power words (glossary terms) and a readability score that ensures the text is accessible to teens and tweens. Many stories also have extra materials to aid in classroom use. Students for a Better Future’s core mission is to provide students displaying academic potential, who are financially needy and demonstrate resilience and tenacity, with the opportunity to study at some of the best high schools and post–secondary institutions in Cape Town. South African-born Sue Struengmann and her German husband Dr Andreas Struengmann first recognised the need to invest in South Africa’s children through education whilst working together in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape. Both were working in Tsolo at the time, Dr Struengmann as a medical intern at the mission hospital and Mrs Struegmann, in the local school. They were struck by the lack of resources available to the community. Mrs Struengmann recalls that there wasn’t enough medicine and not even pens and pencils available to learners at the school. At that point, they made a promise to each other that if they were ever successful enough, they would do their part to help young people in this country get a good education. As scholars began to graduate from high school, a Post-Secondary Programme was established, which provided partial and full funding opportunities to study post-secondary education, as well as providing access to job coaching, mentorship and other support. Their Vision is to develop well-rounded and goal-oriented individuals who will contribute positively to the future of South Africa and become citizens of the world.
